Amid speculations, former minister and AIADMK leader KA Sengottaiyan on Tuesday, 9 September, confirmed that he had met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi.
Speaking to the media at the Coimbatore airport, KA Sengottaiyan said that while he had earlier mentioned going to Haridwar, once he reached Delhi he was given permission to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah, as well as the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
The move comes days after AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Saturday, 6 September, announced that KA Sengottaiyan has been relieved from all party responsibilities.
Sengottaiyan issued an ultimatum to the party leadership on Friday, 5 September, to unite the organisation, which now stands divided.
Addressing the media at Gobichettipalayam in Erode, he said that the AIADMK could win only if it took back those who had left the party. He said those who had left were not asking for positions or responsibilities in the party, but wanted to be taken back into the fold.
He stated that discussions were held on the present political situation and that he conveyed the need for unity and for strengthening the AIADMK.
Sengottaiyan noted that in a democracy, it is natural for leaders to express their views and feelings, and such expressions should be welcomed.
He also said that during his meeting, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw was present, and he raised the issue of the Erode–Yercaud Express train, which was originally scheduled to leave at 10 p.m. but now departs earlier at 3 a.m. He pointed out that this timing causes difficulties for traders, students, and the public, and requested that the schedule be revised. The minister assured him that the matter would be considered.
Sengottaiyan added that he would continue to work for public welfare and for strengthening the party with everyone’s cooperation.
