Issues within AIADMK

Since the election results were announced on 4 May, the AIADMK has been facing continuous setbacks. The cracks within the party became visible during the trust vote held in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on 13 May. Defying the party whip, 25 MLAs led by CV Shanmugam and SP Velumani voted in support of the TVK government.

Following this, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami removed all of them from their party posts.

Later, four MLAs from the Shanmugam camp — Maragatham Kumaravel, S Jayakumar, M Sathyabama and Esakki Subaya — resigned from the Assembly and formally joined the TVK.

On 16 June, former minister C Vijayabaskar also resigned as an AIADMK MLA, dealing yet another blow to the Palaniswami-led party. Vijayabaskar was elected from the Viralimalai constituency in Pudukkottai district.

His resignation came after Speaker JCD Prabhakar dropped the disqualification proceedings initiated against 21 AIADMK MLAs after the party pardoned them for violating the whip.

However, an inquiry was launched against four other legislators, Esakki Subbaiah, Maragatham Kumaravel, V Sathyabama, and D Jayakumar.

The Speaker said Palaniswami had submitted a petition seeking the disqualification of 25 AIADMK MLAs for allegedly voting against the party whip. He added that his office later received four letters from Palaniswami, stating that 21 of the 25 MLAs had been pardoned after they had expressed regret for their actions.
