Synopsis: Former AIADMK leader KA Sengottaiyan has joined actor Vijay’s TVK after his expulsion from AIADMK. He will most likely be given a plum post in TVK amid ongoing AIADMK unification tussle.

Former AIADMK leader and senior minister K.A. Sengottaiyan has officially joined the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

As per reports, following his induction into the party, Sengottaiyan will be awarded a plum post. He has also been given charge as Organisation Secretary for four districts — Erode, Coimbatore, the Nilgiris, and Tiruppur.

He will function in coordination with party general secretary Anand, strengthening the organisational structure of the party in western Tamil Nadu.

This comes on the heels of reports emerging that the veteran, who was recently expelled from AIADMK, is set to join actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party soon.

Expulsion from AIADMK

On 5 September, addressing the media, Sengottaiyan gave AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami an ultimatum to unify the party. Following his statement, Sengottaiyan was relieved from his party responsibilities.

When reporters in Gobichettipalayam asked Sengottaiyan whether he would join the TVK, he responded taking a dig at AIADMK.

“After working for this party for 50 years, it has rewarded me by stripping me of all leadership positions and even the basic membership. This has caused me deep distress. I do not wish to comment on anything else,” he said.

Later, during the Thevar Jayanthi celebrations, he appeared alongside already expelled leaders O Panneerselvam and TTV Dhinakaran at Pasumpon, where they gave a joint interview.

Subsequently, on 31 October, the AIADMK announced his removal from all basic party positions. Meanwhile, O Panneerselvam (OPS) had warned that if the party were not unified by 15 December, he would proceed with the next phase of action.

With the AIADMK’s crucial general council meeting scheduled for 10 December in Vanagaram, OPS’ deadline has been viewed as critical.
