Praveen Chakravarthy

The Congress is fuming over the Chairman of All India Professionals’ Congress, Praveen Chakravarthy, meeting with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay in Chennai on 5 December.

Though Chakravarthy had been quoted, saying that the meeting was in his personal capacity and politically insignificant, the Congress remained reluctant to buy the argument.

Sources claimed that TNCC chief K Selvaperunthagai has been unhappy over the controversy triggered by the meeting. They said that if allegations against Chakravarthy were proven, the AICC would take disciplinary action.

Additionally, sources said, Chakravarthy, acting independently without the high command’s approval had miffed the AICC.

Sources, however, replied in the negative when asked whether Chakravarthy’s meeting with Vijay indicated a possible shift in alliances.

“When the DMK–Congress alliance is already strong, why would the Congress walk out of it?” they asked. They acknowledged that several rumours were circulating, but stressed that only information released by the official party leadership should be treated as authentic.

They insisted that Chakravarthy’s proximity with Rahul Gandhi did not grant him the authority to make decisions on alliances.

Incidentally, Chakravarthy stirred a controversy with his “personal” meeting with Vijay even as Selvaperunthagai has been strengthening the party across all levels ahead of the Assembly election in 2026.
