37 children fall ill after lizard found in mid-day meal at Kallakurichi school

Synopsis: On 8 September, 37 students at a Government Middle School in Jambai, Tamil Nadu, fell ill after eating a mid day meal reportedly contaminated with a lizard. Cooked for 89 students, the meal caused nausea and vomiting. Affected children were treated at local hospitals and later discharged. All are now stable, and authorities are investigating the incident.

As many as 37 students of a Government Middle School in Jambai, near Kallakurichi, Tamil Nadu, fell ill on Monday, 8 September, reportedly after consuming the mid day meal served on the campus.

Later, official sources said a lizard was found in the food prepared for the children. The meal, cooked for 89 students, was served around noon.

Soon after eating, several children complained of nausea and vomiting. Teachers and staff immediately arranged for medical help.

The affected students were taken to the Manalurpettai Primary Health Centre and later shifted to the Tiruvannamalai Government Hospital for further treatment.

They were kept under observation to rule out any complications. Officials confirmed that all the students are now stable and have been discharged.
