A total of 1,729 TASMAC shop supervisors across Tamil Nadu have been served show-cause notices for keeping liquor outlets closed without prior notice, while 245 of them have been suspended, according to district-wise data released by the TASMAC administration.
TASMAC employees in several districts staged an unauthorised protest on November 1 by refusing to open liquor outlets, opposing the new system of collecting empty liquor bottles from consumers. The system had been introduced following complaints that liquor was being sold at prices above the maximum retail price (MRP).
“This government does not run liquor outlets for profit, and it won’t allow the continuation of any loopholes that allow some people to make money illegally,” K Vignesh, Minister of Prohibition and Excise of Tamil Nadu, had said.
Following the protest, the TASMAC administration issued show-cause notices to supervisors who had kept their shops closed.
As many as 931 supervisors were served notices on November 1, followed by another 798 on November 2, taking the total to 1,729.
Region-wise suspensions
The Chennai region recorded the highest number of suspensions, with 169 supervisors being suspended.
The figures include:
– Chennai North – 58
– Chennai Central – 50
– Tiruvallur East – 61

In the Salem region, 75 supervisors from Krishnagiri district were suspended.
