In one of the biggest seizures this election season, authorities arrested three individuals, who were attempting to transport a staggering sum of nearly ₹4 crore in cash from Chennai to Tirunelveli by train.
The seizure, worth ₹3 crore 90 lakh in ₹500 notes, was carried out at Tambaram railway station in Tamil Nadu.
Three men, allegedly supporters of BJP candidate for Tirunelveli, Nainar Nagendran, have been arrested in connection with the incident. One of the three is a card-carrying member of BJP.
Sathish, whose BJP membership number ends with digits 6439 according to the membership card recovered by authorities, was among the three arrested with cash while boarding the train to Tirunelveli.
Those arrested have been identified as 33-year-old S Sathish, 31-year-old S Navin and 26-year-old S Perumal, according to reports.
Following the seizure of ₹4 crore, election commission officials and investigative agencies carried out raids at a hotel reportedly linked to BJP’s Nainar Nagendran in Chennai’s Kilpauk.
The seized money was deposited in the treasury, pending the ongoing investigation. Further details are awaited.
Earlier, on 17 March, officials checking vehicles in the Vettu Kattu Valasu area in Erode stopped a motorcyclist and found ₹3 lakh cash in his possession.
Since there were no proper documents for the amount, the officials seized the money and registered a case against the person identified as Vadivelu of Erode district.
Similarly, at the railway station in Erode, the flying squad team found two merchants having a bundle containing clothes without proper documents for their purchase.
The team seized the clothes, but later, the merchants submitted the bills, officials said.
The Customs Department on 11 March, had seized over ₹100 crore worth of hashish and ganja from a shed located on a prawn farm in the Mimisal village in the Tiruchirappalli district of Tamil Nadu.
In a joint operation involving the Coast Guard and Customs, the DRI seized over ₹3 crore worth gold smuggled from Sri Lanka and dumped in the sea off Mandapam, on Friday, 5 April.
The agencies recovered a total of 4.9 kg of the precious metal from the sea bed near Ramanathapuram.
