The Economic Survey of 2023-2024 said the MGNREGA work demand does not directly correlate with increased rural distress at a micro-level. Quoting data, it said states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu use more funds under the rural employment scheme than poorer states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Multiple studies have been conducted to find a definite cause for such unevenness.
