Karnataka’s caste census report, which was submitted to the government last month, is a hot potato for the Congress with the general election dates out. The powerful Lingayats and Vokkaligas oppose it and the dominant Ahinda social group supports it. The Siddaramaiah-led Congress cannot afford to irritate either for fear of losing votes and has to tread carefully.
