The controversy surrounding the appointment of the pro-tem Speaker in the 18th Lok Sabha united the Kerala CPI(M) and Congress in their condemnation of the Union government for overlooking senior Congress MP Kodikunnil Suresh. Traditionally fierce adversaries, this issue made them set aside their differences to take a united stand against what they perceived as an autocratic tendency.
