The landslides that obliterated Wayanad villages and killed hundreds were a result of ignoring multiple warnings issued on the backdrop of climate change. Besides the Gadgil report that marked the area as an ecologically sensitive zone, the Hume Centre in Wayanad reportedly issued a warning of possible landslides 16 hours in advance. The tragedy was waiting to happen, argues Rashme Sehgal.
