Religious scholars and devotees criticise Brahmanisation for the changed rituals of praying to a gramadevata (village goddess) in Tirupati. The Gangamma Jatara, a religious festival, is based on the folk legend of Gangamma. However, the village rituals have given way to Brahminical rites after the makeshift temple was taken over by the Department of Temple Endowments and Tataiahgunta Devasthanam.
