A case was registered against a man in Telangana on Friday, 30 December, for allegedly hurting the religious sentiments of Lord Ayyappa devotees.

This came after a viral video purportedly showed the man making “derogatory” comments about the deity, the police said.

B Naresh was accused of making remarks against Lord Ayyappa and hurting the religious sentiments of the devotees — and Hindus at large — while addressing a meeting in Vikarabad district on 19 December, the police said.

The complainant said that while he was browsing social media, he came upon the video of Naresh making the “derogatory” comments. He then lodged the complaint.

Details of the case

The complainant said that the comments were made deliberately with an ulterior motive to ridicule and hurt the religious feelings of Hindus, and purposefully hurt devotees who take Ayyappa Deeksha.

He added that his religious feelings were deeply hurt.

Based on the complaint, a case was registered at the Kodangal Police Station against Naresh under Sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence), 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, the police said.
