A 50-year-old woman has been killed, alleged by a tiger. Her maimed body was discovered in the early hours of Wednesday, 1 February.

The incident occurred in Theppakadu, a village in the Nilgiris district, about 35 km from Udhagamandalam.

Mari, of Padi village, had gone to collect firewood nearby on Tuesday evening, the police said.

When the woman did not return home, her relatives immediately alerted the forest department officials.

During their morning rounds, the forest department staff noticed the woman’s body about 200 metres from the elephant camp.

The injury marks on the body have led to suspicion that a tiger might have attacked her, they said.

The kin of the deceased was provided ₹5 lakh compensation, officials added.
