In a proud moment for the Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab, Aam Aadmi Clinics have bagged the first prize at the Global Health Supply Chain Summit held in Nairobi (Kenya). The three-day summit began on 16 November.
Mann said that the Department of Health and Family Welfare received the first prize for its submission titled “Strengthening last mile delivery of drugs: A case study from Punjab”.
“Eighty-five countries had participated in the conference and submissions from four countries, including that from the government of Punjab, were selected for the final presentation,” he added.
Mann said the state government showcased the success story of the Aam Aadmi Clinics and how the government of Punjab has exponentially increased the number of primary healthcare and delivered quality health services.
Mann lauded the winning entry for being presented with the rigour of science, superpositioning of the problem statement, great clarity of solution and impact, innovative solutions, compelling case of how political will galvanised primary healthcare transformation, fostering collaboration with the private sector and clear articulation of reforms pathway.
The chief minister said, “The participating countries have evinced keen interest in visiting Punjab to see the Aam Aadmi Clinics and understand how 84 essential drugs and 40 plus diagnostics are being made available closer to households and without any cost to the patients.”
He added: “All the Aam Aadmi Clinics are IT-enabled with end-to-end digitisation of registration, doctor consultation, investigations, and prescriptions. This recognition has filled us with more humility and dedication to serve the people of the state.”
“More such concerted efforts will be made in the coming times to ensure that the people of the state benefit from such pro-people initiatives in a big way”, said Mann.

Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh on Tuesday, 21 November, said that 100 more Aam Aadmi Clinics are ready to be thrown open to the public, while the Punjab government has also given the go-ahead to set up 70 additional Aam Aadmi Clinics.
“An amount of ₹550 crores is being spent for the upgradation of around 40 secondary care health facilities including district, sub-divisional hospitals and Community Health Centres (CHCs)”, he added.
He also appealed to the Union government to release the Ayushman funds, which have been accumulated to the tune of ₹621 crores and requested it to consider the Aam Aadmi Clinics as a state scheme and won’t use Ayushman funds for this scheme.
Meanwhile, Mann also chaired a Cabinet meeting on Monday, 20 November, which gave a nod to convening a two-day state Assembly session on 28 and 29 November. Amongst various Bills slated to be tabled will be the much-awaited Punjab Canal and Drainage Bill, 2023.
The Bill aims to regulate the irrigation network of the state and to ensure hindrance-free canal waters to farmers and landowners for irrigation, maintenance, repair and timely cleanliness of water channels.
The decision comes days after Governor Banwarilal Purohit prorogued the budget session of the Assembly on 15 November after the Punjab Vidhan Sabha secretariat wrote to him regarding the same.
Meanwhile, in a major change in the Punjab Cabinet, minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer has been stripped of most of his portfolios and left with only the Sports and Youth Welfare department.
His departments of Mines and Geology and Water Resources have been given to Public Relations Minister Chetan Singh Jouramajra while his other department of Science and Technology has been kept by the Chief Minister himself.
Interestingly, Jouramajra became the fourth Irrigation minister of Punjab during the 20 months of AAP rule in the state.
