Arrested following a tip-off

SSOC AIG Ashwani Kapur said that the arrest was made following a tip-off that Harjeet, who hails from Ghanshampur village of Gurdaspur district, had come to India around a month ago and was involved in activities such as terror funding and was also planning to execute few targeted killings in the state.

“He was about to leave for Spain by boarding a flight from IGI airport. The police had issued a lookout circular (LOC) against him, which eventually led to his arrest on Tuesday from the airport,” said Kapur.

“Further investigations revealed that his terror activities were assisted by his aide Amrinder who was arrested from Khanna. The preliminary investigation revealed that both the accused came in contact with each other through social media and shared similar radical psychology,” he told the media on on Thursday, 3 August.

He also said that Harjeet Singh had sent financial aid to his accomplice Amrinder several times from Spain to execute the targeted killing of religious leaders.

The AIG said the investigation also revealed that Harjeet was working at the behest of some foreign-based radicals linked to KLF and has been using two fake Facebook accounts for promoting radical content, including activities of Sikhs for Justice (SFJ).

SSOC recovers heroin and drug money

Meanwhile, the Amritsar unit of SSOC busted a cross-border drug smuggling racket and seized 6 kg heroin worth ₹30 crore and ₹1.5 lakh of drug money with the arrest of Jalandhar resident Shinder Singh.

DGP Gaurav Yadav said that SSOC Amritsar had received reliable input that accused Shinder and his accomplices had recently procured a big consignment of heroin pushed into the Indian territory through the riverine route in Ferozepur sector by Pakistan-based smugglers and were in Amritsar to deliver the consignment.

“Preliminary investigations reveal that smugglers exploited a gap, which emerged due to floods, in the fencing along the river of Indo-Pak border to smuggle the drug consignment. Investigations are being conducted to unearth the entire network of drug suppliers, dealers and their buyers,” said SSOC AIG Sukhminder Singh Mann.

“All the efforts are being made to probe their backward and forward linkages to arrest the remaining members of this group”, he added.
