Lok Sabha election 2024: Polling in 7 phases between 19 April and 1 June, counting on 4 June

Date of polling for Andhra Pradesh assembly election is 13 May. Voting for Lok Sabha polls will be held on 19 April in Tamil Nadu, 26 April in Kerala and Karnataka, 7 May in Karnataka, 13 May in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

India will go to polls to elect its 18th Lok Sabha in seven phases between 19 April and 1 June, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Saturday, 16 March.

Elections for the Andhra Pradesh Assembly will also be held simultaneously. The polling date for the Andhra Pradesh Assembly election will be 13 May, 2024. The votes will be counted on 4 June.

Voting for the Lok Sabha elections 2024 will be held in two phases in Karnataka.

The Southern states will go to polls on the following dates:

  • 19 April – Tamil Nadu
  • 26 April – Kerala, Karnataka (phase 1)
  • 7 May – Karnataka (phase 2)
  • 13 May – Andhra Pradesh, Telangana

Is this the last general election before the One Nation, One Election formula gets accepted and kicks in in 2029? Time will tell.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who leads the National Democratic Alliance with the BJP at the helm, is eyeing returning to power for the third consecutive time since 2014.

The Opposition INDIA bloc, including the Congress and various regional and Left parties as constituents, are determined to prove third-time lucky in thwarting Modi.

Biggest election exercise

The world’s biggest democratic exercise will involve a massive registered electorate of 96.88 crore citizens comprising 49.7 crore male and 47.1 crore female voters.

As many as 2.63 crore new electors can exercise their franchise this time. The country has 1.84 crore voters in the 18-19 age group.

They will vote for 543 seats in the Lok Sabha, the Lower House of Parliament. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the ruling BJP won 303 seats, while Congress got 52 seats.

There are 10.5 lakh polling stations, and 55 EVMs will be used.

Four states, Arunachal Pradesh (19 April), Andhra Pradesh (13 May), Odisha (4 phases — 13, 20, 25 May and 1 June) and Sikkim (19 April) will also hold Assembly elections simultaneously.

The ECI will simultaneously hold 26 Assembly by-polls in Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, UP, Tripura, West Bengal, Telangana, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
