Impressed by the GST administration in Telangana, the Punjab government on Thursday, 3 August, decided to take lessons and adopt the same measures for the improvement of its own taxation system.
A special team of the Punjab Taxation Commissionerate was on a study tour of Telangana and studied practices like online monitoring system, return compliance, scrutiny of returns, post-audit of refund, etc, being followed by Telangana.
Punjab Finance, Planning, Excise and Taxation Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said that Telangana was being assisted by IIT Hyderabad in data analytics and the development of IT-based modules in the implementation of GST administration.
He said that Punjab looked forward to integrating the best practices of Telangana with the current system.
“Tech tools should be friendly to honest taxpayers as they need a clear strategy and will be required to keep pace with the evolving digital tax administration,” said Cheema.
“The state taxation department will adopt the latest software and technological solutions to strengthen its digital tax administration to meet the challenges of the environment in which businesses are operating nowadays,” he added.
Chairing a review meeting with the officials after the tour, Cheema said that the digital technologies adopted by the newly setup Tax Intelligence Unit (TIU) were proving to assist the tax authorities to drive better enforcement, increase the tax base, and plug leakages.
He encouraged the officials to look for more technological solutions especially tailored to the requirements of the state to plug any possible tax evasion, incorrect reporting, and administrative errors.
Financial Commissioner Taxation Vikas Partap and Taxation Commissioner Kamal Kishore Yadav were also present at the meeting.
