Tight security cover is in place in and around the city of Coimbatore for two days — 13 and 14 February — in view of the anniversary of the 1998 serial blasts, the police said.
The blasts, which claimed 52 lives and saw over 100 injured, happened on 14 February 1998.
As many as 2,500 police personnel are deployed in the city and over 500 on the outskirts to prevent any eventualities, as many organisations have decided to observe the anniversary.

The BJP is organising a meeting in RS Puram on Tuesday, where the first blast occurred before the arrival of party veteran LK Advani to address an election meeting on 14 February 1998.
The BJP workers and other Hindu outfits will pay floral tributes at the meeting to be addressed by BJP state president K Annamalai.
Amidst demands from various Hindu outfits, including the BJP, for a memorial for blast victims in RS Puram, a group belonging to Hindustan People’s Service Organisation visited the district collectorate today with a petition and a model of the pillar for the memorial, demanding the need for constructing it.
