Siddaramaiah Karnataka opinion poll 2023

Moral policing is on the rise in Mangaluru city and its outskirts because Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai is encouraging such acts by right-wing activists, Congress leader Siddaramaiah alleged on Saturday, 17 December.

Addressing reporters at the airport in Mangaluru, he said that eight moral policing incidents have been reported in Dakshina Kannada in the recent past. On 12 December, Bajrang Dal activists reportedly thrashed two Muslim men for roaming with Hindu girls at midnight in Kottara, Mangaluru.

Role of government

Condemning such acts by anti-social elements, he said that strict action should be taken against those involved in moral policing.

Siddaramaiah wondered whether the chief minister is aware of the existing laws and the duties of the police. The government should not allow such activities to take place, he said.

In fact, in October 2021, Siddaramaiah took to Twitter to address the same issue.

“Innocent women are being targeted in the name of moral policing. The government is trying to protect anti-social elements instead of putting them behind bars,” stated one of his tweets.

Reacting to the widespread criticism against the statement made by Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president DK Shivakumar on the Mangaluru cooker bomb blast, Siddaramaiah said that the BJP is manipulating the KPCC chief’s statement and spreading false information among the people.

The Congress vs BJP debate

On the BJP’s charge that terrorist activities were on the rise during the rule of the Congress, he asked why the BJP could not contain terrorism in the country in the last nine years.

“Now they have a double-engine government here and why are they not preventing terrorist activities?” he asked.

He said that the BJP leaders are trying to divert the attention of the people from burning issues faced by the state and are provoking the masses with emotive issues.
