Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, along with his Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal, launched development projects worth ₹1,854 crore, including an inter-state bus terminus in Gurdaspur on Saturday, 2 December.

Addressing a public meeting, Mann said that they had fulfilled the long-pending demand of the bus terminus for Gurdaspur district. Both leaders urged voters to vote for “Aam Aadmi” (common man) in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

Kejriwal expressed confidence that they will be winning all 13 Parliamentary seats in the state in the next year general elections as people loved the government.

Training guns at BJP MP and Bollywood actor Sunny Deol, Kejriwal said that he had long ditched his constituency and betrayed voters who trusted him. He said that such “big people” would not do anything for people’s welfare.

“Last time, you elected Sunny Deol (from this seat). Did he ever come? Have you ever seen his face? He never came. We thought he was a very big actor and by giving him votes, he would do something. Such big people will do nothing. Give votes to ‘Aam Aadmi’, he will do something for you and he will pick up your phone,” Kejriwal charged.

Hitting out at the previous governments for “looting” Punjab, Kejriwal said that the “honest” AAP government has filled the state exchequer, which was left empty by the rival parties when they were in power. He said that the party was being regularly targeted for working for people and breaking the decades-long culture of corruption.

Kejriwal said that the government would soon launch ₹1,850 crore worth of projects in one of the Lok Sabha constituencies in the state.

“It is the first time Punjab is seeing such ‘vikas kranti’ (development). No other party did it. When you went to other parties, they used to say that they did not have funds. They did have funds but they looted that money,” he quipped.

“Now, there is an honest government and I assure you that there is no shortage of money”, the AAP National Convenor said. He added, “Punjab ka khazana bhara hua hai (Punjab’s exchequer is filled). In the last 1.5 years, we have filled the treasury which they left empty. We will meet all your requirements. This time, with the amount of love and blessings we are getting, my heart says that we will win 13 seats in Punjab and 1 in Chandigarh.”

‘Previous govts usurped taxpayer’s money’

Mann said that the Punjab government is working for the well-being of the common man in contrast with previous times when the projects were confined only to paper.

Mann said, “We have introduced AI in the working of the state government and, hence, have detected 540 km of roads that do not exist. We have saved ₹163.26 crore merely in estimates of roads alone. This pilferage of the common man’s money has been checked and now, action will be taken against those who have usurped the taxpayer’s money.”

He also slammed the Union government for arresting AAP leaders like Manish Sisodia, Satyendar Jain, and Sanjay Singh.

“They are baffled over the success and pro-people stance of AAP and now, they are conspiring to arrest Arvind Kejriwal too. They can arrest Kejriwal but they can’t kill his ideology and the love for him in the hearts of people,” said Mann.

Opposition reacts

Meanwhile, the opposition was up against Mann and Kejriwal.

Partap Singh Bajwa, Congress MLA and Leader of the Opposition in Vidhan Sabha, lambasted the Chief Minister for taking credit for the developmental work started during the previous governments including the Congress regime.

“Construction of the Gurdaspur bus stand commenced even before the AAP got hold of power, however, the Punjab Chief Minister did not refrain from taking the credit for the same. He leaves no opportunity to gain publicity from the works done or initiated during the Congress government,” he said.

Attacking the Chief Minister, BJP state president Sunil Jakhar said that the honour and pride of the state has been mortgaged by him to the AAP senior leadership in Delhi.

“Bhagwant Mann has brought the status of the chief ministership to a new low. He has to invite his Delhi masters for the inauguration of even small projects like schools and bus stands. A prerogative which should be the Chief Minister’s,” he said.

He further added that the Union government is allocating funds for the state, while Mann is busy squandering the money for publicity of his party supremo Arvind Kejriwal. “These funds are for the welfare of the people and not for personal publicity of party leaders. We will definitely ask for every penny to be accounted,” he charged.
