19-year-old arrested with 2 kg gold sewn to undergarments in Karipur airport

The young woman, returning from Dubai, denied the allegations at first, but on examining her, the packets of gold were found.

A young woman, who had returned from Dubai, was arrested outside the Calicut International Airport (also called Karipur Airport) in Kozhikode on Monday, 26 December, for allegedly smuggling close to two kg of gold, worth around ₹1 crore, police said.

The 19-year-old student, Shahala, is a resident of Kasaragod, Kerala, smuggled the gold in her undergarments.

An officer of the Karipur police station said that three packets of gold, in paste form, were sewn into her undergarments.

The contraband was not detected by Customs personnel at the airport; however, the police, based on a tip, were waiting for the young woman at the terminal’s parking area, the officer said.

Caught red-handed

When questioned, she denied the allegations, but on examining her, the packets of gold were found, he said.

The seized gold weighed around 1.88 kg, the officer added.

The police have handed over the case and the contraband to the Customs Department for further investigation.
