Tamil Nadu: OPS seeks to retain control of AIADMK bank accounts

A day after being ousted from the AIADMK, O Panneerselvam (OPS) wrote a letter to managers of the Karur Vysya Bank and State Bank of India on Tuesday, 12 July, asking them to not let anyone other than him handle the accounts of the party.

The move came hours after the Edappadi Palaniswami (EPS) faction wrote a letter to the bank managers to hand over the account details to former minister and EPS loyalist Dindigul Srinivasan.

The aIADMK leader was appointed party treasurer by Palaniswami at the general council meeting held on Monday.

Claim to AIADMK bank accounts

OPS, in his letter to the managers, said former chief minister J Jayalalithaa appointed him AIADMK treasurer in 2017, and so he was the one who could access these bank accounts.

“I have been operating the party account, its development funds along with various fixed deposits, and the party’s headquarters funds as a treasurer,” he said in the letter.

“I am the coordinator and treasurer of the AIADMK as per the records of the Election Commission, and the matter is before the Madras High Court and the apex court. So, I urge the managers not to permit anybody except me to handle the accounts,” he added.

“You shall be held responsible for any misuse or misappropriation of funds,” OPS said in the letter.

Office sealed

The kerfuffle over the AIADMK bank accounts apart, the EPS faction on Tuesday registered a complaint against the OPS faction for allegedly breaking the doors and damaging the party headquarters.

On Monday, revenue officials sealed the AIADMK headquarters in Chennai, and the police registered cases against the attackers.

Mylapore Deputy Commissioner of Police Disha Mittal has formed three special teams to investigate Monday’s violence.

The Mylapore police have registered an FIR against 400 people under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.

They are examining CCTV footage gathered from AIADMK headquarters and nearby areas to identify the culprits.
