Activist Rahul Easwar had reportedly shared information connected to the complainant, violating privacy norms.
Synopsis: Kerala Police detained activist Rahul Easwar on Sunday, 30 November, for allegedly revealing the identity of a woman who had filed a sexual harassment complaint against Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil. A case has also been registered against KPCC General Secretary Sandeep Warrier and three others including Easwar for allegedly sharing information connected to the complainant.
Kerala Police took activist Rahul Easwar into custody on Sunday, 30 November, after he allegedly revealed the identity of a woman who had filed a sexual harassment complaint against former Youth Congress president and Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil.
The Thiruvananthapuram Cyber Police questioned Easwar on Sunday evening at the cyber police station located on the premises of the Armed Reserve Camp.
The action followed the complainant approaching authorities and alleging that she was being insulted on social media after filing her complaint, police sources said.
Easwar had reportedly shared information connected to the complainant, violating privacy norms and prompting swift action from the cyber wing.
A case has also been registered against Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee General Secretary Sandeep Warrier, Pathanamthitta Mahila Congress District General Secretary Ranjitha Pulikkal, and Supreme Court lawyer Deepa Joseph.
According to the charge sheet, Ranjitha Pulikkal is the first accused, Deepa Joseph the second, while Sandeep Warrier is listed as the fourth accused. Easwar has been named the fifth accused.
The accused have been booked under Sections 43 and 66 of the IT Act, and Sections 72 and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
A police team visited Easwar’s residence earlier on Sunday and directed him to appear for questioning. He was also instructed to hand over his mobile phone and laptop for examination.
Officials are probing whether Easwar’s social media posts directly contributed to the harassment faced by the complainant online.
Reacting to the development, Sandeep Warrier said that he had not issued any statement or social media post that would disclose the identity of the complainant.
He alleged that the complainant’s name was first revealed by the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), claiming that a DYFI leader publicly mentioned it during a speech, yet no case was filed in that instance.
Warrier added that the issue would be fought “legally and politically.”
Meanwhile, ADGP S Sreejith confirmed that further action would follow regarding the cyber harassment directed at the complainant.
Police sources indicated that the investigation is ongoing and that more names may be added to the accused list as evidence is examined.
