Synopsis: Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan, the NDA nominee, was elected India’s 15th Vice-President on Tuesday, securing 452 votes. The vice-presidential poll followed the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar in July, and with this victory, Radhakrishnan will assume office as Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha.

Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominee, was elected as India’s 15th Vice President on Tuesday. He secured a total of 452 votes.

“Shri CP Radhakrishnan has secured 452 first-preference votes. As the first-preference votes secured by Shri CP Radhakrishnan were greater than the requisite quota… Shri CP Radhakrishnan has been duly elected to the office of Vice-President of India. The result is being sent to the Election Commission of India and the Ministry of Law and Justice,” said PC Mody, the returning officer, on Tuesday evening.

The contest was between CP Radhakrishnan and the opposition INDIA bloc’s candidate, former Supreme Court judge Justice B Sudershan Reddy.

Voting took place earlier in the day in Parliament. The electoral college consists of 239 members of the Rajya Sabha and 542 elected members of the Lok Sabha, making a total of 781 members from both houses.

Three parties—the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) of Odisha, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) of Punjab, and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) of Telangana—had declared their intent to abstain from voting. Their decision, however, made little difference to the poll arithmetic.

The vice presidential election became necessary after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the post on July 21, citing health reasons.

With this victory, Radhakrishnan will now assume office as the Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha.
