Narendra Modi takes oath as PM for 3rd time; 30 Cabinet ministers also sworn in

The ceremony came less than a week after the NDA gained a simple majority in the Lok Sabha elections, whose results were declared on 4 June.

Narendra Modi takes oath

Narendra Modi on Sunday, 9 June, took oath as the prime minister of India, heralding his third term at the post.

The ceremony, held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, also saw President Droupadi Murmu administering the oath to several ministers.

In all, 30 Cabinet ministers and 41 ministers of state were being sworn in on Sunday.

They included leaders from not only BJP but also other constituents of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

The ceremony came less than a week after the NDA managed to gain a simple majority in the Lok Sabha elections, whose results were declared on 4 June.

Several celebrities and leaders of foreign countries attended the ceremony.

Taking oath

Several ministers from the previous Modi Cabinet were dropped this time, while a few new faces made an appearance.

Those who were dropped included Smriti Irani and Anurag Thakur.

After Modi took oath as prime minister, BJP national president JP Nadda and senior party leaders Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah and Nitin Gadkari took oath.

They were followed by former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan and former Haryana chief minister ML Khattar.

Others who also took oath were Nirmala Sitharaman, S Jaishankar, Piyush Goyal, Dharmendra Pradhan, Jitan Ram Manjhi, Rajeev Ranjan Singh, Sarbanand Sonowal, and Dr Virendra Kumar.

Even Karnataka JD(S) leader and former minister of the state HD Kumaraswamy was also sworn in as a Cabinet minister.

Pralhad Joshi, Jual Oram, Giriraj Singh, Ashwini Vaishnaw; Jyotiraditya Scindia, Bhupendra Yadav, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Anapurna Devi, Kiren Rijiju, and Hardeep Singh Puri also took oath.

Ministers from South India

Several other leaders from south India also took oath as ministers on Sunday.

One such politician was Karnataka BJP leader V Somanna, who is an MP from Tumakuru.

Another such politician was Suresh Gopi, who helped BJP notch a much-awaited Lok Sabha win in Kerala.

Former Telangana BJP president Bandi Sanjay Kumar was also administered the oath of a minister on Sunday.
