Search giant Google on Friday, 19 April, marked the beginning of polling in the largest democracy in the world.

The United States may claim to be the “greatest democracy” across the globe, but it has some shortcomings. The most prominent among them is in a matter of numbers.

A “democracy”, by definition is simply “a system in which the government of a country is elected by the people”.

Up until recently, that was China — in the loosest definition of the term “democracy”: It was the country with the highest number of “electors”, if one ignored the part where it was a one-party state.

In second place back then was India. It was not only a multi-party state, but also one that saw the forming of government by multiple parties — both national and international.

Two factors contribute to India being the largest democracy in the world.

The first, of course, is the sheer number. The UN population data predicted as much around a year ago.

Therefore, with around [an estimated] 1.4 billion people now, India will have an electorate that is at least threefold — if not more — of the US general population, let alone the voters.
