Union Minister for Tourism and Northeastern States G Kishan Reddy shifted gears on Saturday, 22 July, a day after taking charge as the Telangana unit president of the BJP.

After galvanising the workers into action with a spirited speech, he held a review meeting with party leaders on Friday, which he followed up with more brainstorming on Saturday.

Though he wanted to kickstart his work from Gajwel, the constituency of Chief Minister and BRS supremo K Chandrashekar Rao on Saturday, the visit was put off at the last minute.

Kishan Reddy took over from Karimnagar MP Bandi Sanjay Kumar, who was eased out following complaints that he was not getting along with other leaders in the party and that he was focusing on Hindutva too much, which may not cut much ice with the people in a southern state like Telangana.

The party, after protracted deliberations, brought Kishan Reddy to Telangana to connect with the Reddys, a dominant community in the state. The Reddys, according to estimates, constitute about five percent of the population but wield immense clout.

Another aspect that brought Kishan Reddy in Sanjay Bandi’s place is to continue the momentum the latter had achieved in the recent past in Hyderabad and win as many urban Assembly seats in and around the capital city.

Operation Hyderabad

As there are about 30 such seats, the party wants Kishan Reddy to win as many as possible, while keeping in sight the overall objective of bringing the ruling BRS down.

The party’s calculation appears that even though Bandi Sanjay is from a backward community (Munnuru Kapu), there is yet another BC leader Eatala Rajender who is now the chairman of the BJP state Election Management Committee.

Rajender belongs to the Mudiraju caste, whose population is also quite significant in Telangana.

After the baton was passed on to him, Kishan Reddy urged the party workers to expose the “arrogant and corruption-ridden rule” of the BRS ahead of the Assembly elections.

Kishan Reddy discussed key issues with senior leaders at the Core Committee meeting at the party headquarters in Nampally in Hyderabad on Saturday.

Keeping in view the upcoming elections, the leaders decided to work together to bring the BJP to power. A decision was also taken to intensify the agitation against the BRS government at the groundlevel from 1 August.

At the meeting, the leaders decided to make serious efforts to convince the people that the BJP is the only party that can fight against the “anti-people policies” of the BRS government.

Plans have been chalked out to conduct separate programmes in Dalit-dominated areas to promote awareness among them on how the BRS has been hoodwinking them with eye-catching schemes like the Dalit Bandhu.

Appeal to youth

Kishan Reddy also called upon the youth of the state to work with dedication and contribute their mite for the country’s development.

Addressing a Rozgar Mela held at Rail Kalarang, Secunderabad on Saturday — after handing over appointment letters to candidates recruited in various Union government departments — he stated that the government has prioritised the recruitment process by making it faster, transparent, and unbiased.

He said that youth should play an important role in the country’s all-round development and encouraged them to work sincerely in their profession.

The minister further noted that new opportunities were being created in the private sector and the Union government was focusing on new investments and infrastructure development.

He encouraged the youth to seize every opportunity to achieve their dreams. Kishan Reddy also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a target of filling up 10 lakh Union government jobs.

Under this decision, 70,000 to 80,000 appointment letters are being offered to the youth every month. Rozgar Melas are being held every month to achieve this target and the prime minister himself is participating in this programme and interacting with the candidates, he said.

The Union minister handed over appointment letters to 176 candidates recruited in 11 Central government departments like SBI, Geological Survey of India, India Post, Railways, FCI, and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
