The primary opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly, the Congress, moved a breach of privilege motion on Thursday, 14 July, against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Assembly Speaker MB Rajesh on Thursday sought a response from Vijayan on a breach-of-privilege motion moved by Congress MLA Mathew Kuzhalnadan.

In the motion, Kuzhalnadan claimed the chief minister had misled the house by making a false statement about the reported connection between the director of a global consultancy firm and the IT company run by his daughter Veena.

When Kuzhalnadan raised the issue in the Assembly last week, Vijayan countered it by saying that there was no connection between Veena and the particular person, who stands accused of appointing gold-smuggling-case-accused Swapna Suresh in a state-run project.

Vijayan said his daughter’s company had no mentor as described by Kuzhalnadan.

However, Kuzhalnadan sought the speaker’s permission to move a breach-of-privilege motion, claiming he had digital evidence to prove the allegation.

According to Kuzhalnadan, the picture of the consultancy firm director was there on the website of Veena’s company as its mentor till the controversy related to Swapna’s appointment at the state-run project erupted.

The MLA said he had screenshots and other digital evidence to prove that the picture was taken down after the controversy started gaining momentum. He also said Vijayan misled the House by making a false claim.
