Synopsis: BRS MLC K Kavitha has sharply criticised Congress leaders Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi for their absence during the parliamentary debate on the contentious Waqf Amendment Bill, accusing them of only appearing during election season. She expressed disappointment that Rahul Gandhi, despite positioning himself as a defender of peace and minority rights, failed to speak on a bill affecting over 30 crore people.
Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader and Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) K Kavitha on Saturday, 5 April, strongly criticised Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi for their absence during the recent passing of the contentious Waqf Amendment Bill in Parliament.
Kavitha accused the Gandhi siblings of appearing only during election campaigns and failing to defend minority rights when it matters most.
“Telangana people have known the Congress government’s attitude, and especially the Gandhis’ attitude, because only during elections, the Gandhis are paraded across the country, trying to get some votes for Congress,” she said.
“But when it actually matters, when the issue is on the boil, when the issue of protecting the rights of minorities is there, they are not there in the Parliament. Neither are they serious about defending or speaking on the bill.”
The Waqf Amendment Bill was passed by both Houses of Parliament on 3 and 4 April amidst fierce opposition. Kavitha expressed disappointment that the Congress leadership, particularly Rahul Gandhi, did not speak during the debate.
“Why did Rahul Gandhi not speak on this important bill when he talks about peace, when he talks about Mohabbat ka Dukan, and it is the contrary that is happening in this nation today?” she asked.
“Very, very disappointed to see that the main leader of the opposition of our nation does not stand up for more than 30 crore people.”
She also questioned the absence of Priyanka Gandhi, calling it “unfortunate” and suggesting that minority communities across the country were disheartened by the lack of representation from the Congress leadership.
“Priyanka Ji not being there – I have no idea why – but it did not go very well, and we are thoroughly disappointed. Not only me, but the entire minority community. There is huge discussion across the nation that the Gandhi pariwar should have been there,” she said.
“It is unfortunate they were not, but it’s no surprise for the people of Telangana. That is why we call them ‘Election Gandhis.’ If there was an election tomorrow, all three of them would have been present, all three would have spoken on the issue. This much I can say.”
