After Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, it was the turn of BJP national president JP Nadda to assert that BJP was committed to preserving and protecting reservations for the Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and Economically Backward Classes (EBCs).

However, he went a step further and said the saffron party also wanted to enhance these quotas by transferring the 4 percent quota now available in some states for Muslims.

The BJP president delivered powerful speeches in Peddapalli and Bhongir Lok Sabha constituencies on Monday, 6 May.

He said Congress was trying to work against the interests of the SCs, STs, and OBCs.

“It is trying to take away the bread in your hands and give it to the Muslims. Congress is trying to mislead you,” he said.

The ‘reservation for Muslims’ bogie

Speaking at the rallies, Nadda recalled how Congress came to power in undivided Andhra Pradesh in 2004 and created 4 percent reservations for Muslims.

He said: “This only shows whose intent is good and whose is bad. BJP is for you and your welfare.”

The BJP leader continued: “I urge you to realise the ulterior motive of the Congress in providing reservations to the Muslims.”

He also noted that when BJP was in power in neighbouring Karnataka state, it removed the 4 percent reservations provided to Muslims.

“Enter the Congress regime, and the reservation has been restored. Congress wants to cut your reservations and give them to the Muslims,” he said.

Nadda also wanted to know why Rahul Gandhi was silent on the reservation challenge that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had thrown at him.

Modi had asked the Congress leader if he was ready to put his signature on a declaration that he would not cut reservations in force now for SCs, STs, OBCs, and EBCs and give them to Muslims.

Nadda asked: “Why is he [Rahul Gsandhi] silent on the prime minister’s question?”

He continued: “Why is it there was no response from the Congress camp on whether it could categorically and unequivocally say it would not bring in reservations for Muslims through the backdoor?”

The BJP national president also took BRS to task. He said Congress and the regional party were much of the muchness when it came to plundering the state. He added that both were dynasty parties.

The BRS had done nothing for the state, and he was sure Congress would do nothing either, said Nadda.

He also said that the Kaleswaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS) had become an ATM for BRS.

Nadda also said one only needed to look at how BRS chief KCR’s daughter Kavitha went to jail after she figured in the Delhi Liquor policy scam to understand whatever was there to know about the regional party.

On India’s progress

The BJP leader also focused on the saffron party, saying that the growth of the country’s economy was in the fast lane.

He claimed the country was poised to become the third-largest economy in the world in the next five years, and was becoming self-reliant in production.

He also said: “The indications of the development are quite visible. The mobile phones that the people are using have the mark ‘Made in Bharat’. It was not the case earlier. The label used to be ‘Made in China or Korea’.”

He attributed the revolution to the sagacious leadership of the prime minister, and reminded the people that the country was globally in the third position in the automobile sector.

“In the pharma, petroleum and steel sectors, it has already occupied the second position in the world,” he said.

The BJP president also said that so far, national highways had been laid for a length of 56,000 km and that 52,000 km long railway lines had been electrified.

The number of airports had shot up to 148 in the country, and there was internet connectivity in a number of villages now, he said.

The government was providing free ration to 80 crore poor people, and BJP could pull 25 crore people out of poverty under the leadership of Narendra Modi, he claimed.
