Synopsis: Reports emerged that a young BJP MLA, part of an outreach delegation to the US, met President Donald Trump and was embarrassed by his response during an unofficial visit to his private residence.

Reports emerged that a young BJP MP, part of Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor’s outreach delegation to the US to explain Operation Sindoor, met President Donald Trump and was embarrassed by his response during an unofficial visit to his private residence.

Meanwhile, several Opposition leaders questioned the immature conduct of the MP — who allegedly arranged the meeting after fellow delegation member Milind Deora met Trump Jr — and how he bypassed all established diplomatic protocols.

The article also mentioned that the MP was reprimanded over his action by the BJP high command  — in the presence of three senior leaders — after returning to India.

The other members of the delegation, which concluded the US visit on 7 June, were Sarfaraz Ahmad (JMM), Ganti Harish Madhur Balayogi (TDP), Shashank Mani Tripathi (BJP), Bhubaneswar Kalita (BJP), Tejasvi Surya (BJP) and India’s former Ambassador to the US Taranjit Sandhu.

‘Insult to India’s institutional integrity’

Karnataka Information Technology and Biotechnology Minister Priyank Kharge raised a series of questions over the alleged visit, saying it was a serious insult to India’s institutional integrity and diplomatic standing.

“If this news report of the BJP MP’s immature approach is accurate, it is nothing short of disgraceful. Serious questions must be answered:

•How did a sitting MP bypass all established diplomatic protocols to meet a former head of state?

•Was the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) informed or consulted at any stage?

•When part of an official delegation, what justified this impulsive and immature conduct?

•Who is this young BJP MP and what action has the Government taken to address this breach of decorum?” Kharge wrote on X.

“It’s deeply ironic, while the Centre routinely denies permission to state-led investment delegations with no explanation, BJP MPs seem to have the liberty to flout protocol for photo-ops. This incident becomes even more alarming in the current context: the U.S. President has been openly aligning with Pakistan and taking credit for brokering a ceasefire in the #OperationSindoor.”

“This is not some idle political gossip, it is a serious insult to India’s institutional integrity and diplomatic standing. It deserves more than silence. It demands accountability,” he added.

Speculations over the identity

According to the report, the MP was taken to Trump’s private residence in Florida—Mar-a-Lago — by an old friend residing in the US, whose conduct is often considered mysterious.

The BJP MP was reportedly introduced to Trump as someone “very close to the country’s head”. “However, in typical Trump fashion, his behaviour toward the MP was far from respectful, with offhand remarks that were reportedly quite hurtful,” it said.

Meanwhile, the Congress’s Kerala Unit questioned on X whether the person in question was Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya.

“Waiting for the BJP MP to deny the Trump meeting rumours, call it a complete fabrication, unnecessary politics being played by enemies and then threaten to sue for defamation, claiming he didn’t even go to Mar-a-Lago. And then, as I’m sure the media outlet has iron-clad proof, for them to release his boarding pass or photos or something,” wrote an X user by the username Apurv Nagpal.

“This BJP MP met Trump in USA, got bèlt treatment from him, embarrassed so bad that he told nobody. Guess who? Hint: Emergency Exit expert,” wrote another user.
