Synopsis: Monsoon season causes a surge in health issues like typhoid, gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhoea and stomach infection and skin issues. To avoid the risk of these diseases, a doctor suggests maintaining good hygiene, using mosquito repellents and drinking purified water.
As Bengaluru moves from intense heat to monsoon, a surge in health issues, including typhoid, gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhoea and stomach infection, and skin issues.
In the few days leading up to Tuesday, 1 July, we have seen more than 40–60 patients visiting the clinic each day. This represents an increase of almost 15 percent compared to the number of cases usually reported at this time of year.
Heavy rains and changes in weather conditions are leading to a rise in monsoon-related diseases, especially waterborne infections like malaria, dengue, and chikungunya etc.
To avoid the risk of these diseases, we suggest our patients maintain good hygiene, use mosquito repellents and drink purified water.
One of the factors to minimise the health risks during the monsoon season is staying hydrated and active, and consuming home-cooked food that includes Vitamin C, probiotics, and antioxidants.
Keep your feet dry and clean, especially after walking in the rain.
Bathe immediately if you’ve been exposed to flood or dirty water.
2. Drink safe water
Use filtered, boiled, or packaged water.
Avoid drinking tap water, especially outside the home.
Carry your own water bottle when stepping out.
3. Eat fresh and hygienic food
Avoid street food and cut fruits exposed to the air.
Eat well-cooked, home-prepared meals.
Store leftovers in clean containers and refrigerate properly.
4. Prevent mosquito breeding
Do not let water stagnate in pots, tyres, or containers.
Use mosquito repellents, nets, and screens at home.
Wear full-sleeved clothing, especially during early mornings and evenings.
5. Protect your immune system
Eat immunity-boosting foods rich in Vitamin C, zinc, and antioxidants.
Stay well-hydrated and get seven to eight hours of sleep daily.
Regular moderate exercise improves overall resistance to infections.
6. Keep your environment clean
Clear drains and remove any objects collecting rainwater.
Disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home and work.
Ensure proper garbage disposal to prevent rodent and insect infestation.
7. Use proper footwear
Avoid walking barefoot in muddy or stagnant water.
Use waterproof footwear to prevent fungal infections and injuries
