The Congress party is tirelessly working to protect the sacred Constitution of India, which serves as a shield for the nation’s marginalised, weaker sections, and minorities. Despite political changes and challenges, Dr BR Ambedkar crafted an exemplary Constitution to stand by the underprivileged.
Subsequent Congress governments took decisive measures to ensure its robust implementation, making Indian democracy a global inspiration.
However, the BJP and its ideological parent, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), are conspiring to alter this widely respected Constitution, causing alarm among the Congress supporters and all democrats.
The BJP and the RSS are spreading misinformation about the Constitution, misleading the public and undermining the rights and interests of marginalised, weaker sections and minorities.
They have insulted Dr Ambedkar, the architect of the Constitution, and are fostering communal discord, contradicting the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, who sacrificed his life for religious harmony.
The Congress, recognising these conspiracies early, has resolved to counter them. Under the leadership of party President Mallikarjun Kharge, it has formulated a nationwide action plan to safeguard the Constitution.
Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, undertook the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ across the country to highlight the BJP’s hostility toward constitutional reservations for marginalised communities and to expose the fear-inducing incidents targeting minorities.
By exposing the BJP’s conspiracies against the constitutional rights of marginalised communities, the Congress delivered a significant blow to the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Despite their slogan ‘Ab Ki Baar Char Sau Paar’ (crossing 400 next time), the BJP failed to secure a majority, forcing reliance on other parties to form the government.
Although the people of India clearly rejected the BJP’s attempts to undermine the Constitution, the party’s approach remains unchanged. In response, the Congress is conducting ‘Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan’ programs across every village, town, mandal, district, and city nationwide to protect the Constitution.
While the Congress fights to safeguard the Constitution, the Sangh Parivar continues to plot against it. As part of these efforts, RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale called for a review of the Constitution’s principles of secularism and socialism.
Such controversial statements are not new for the Sangh Parivar or the BJP. In December 2024, Union Home Minister Amit Shah irresponsibly insulted Dr Ambedkar, revered as a deity by the people, on the parliamentary stage. Had Prime Minister Narendra Modi taken action against Shah, RSS leaders might not have dared to make such inappropriate remarks.
Earlier, on 19 September 2023, the government deliberately omitted the words “secularism” and “socialism” from the preamble of the Constitution copies provided to MPs in the new Parliament building.
Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, along with other opposition leaders, expressed outrage over this act. The repeated attacks by the BJP and Sangh Parivar on the Constitution have exposed their true nature to the nation.
The alarming trends under BJP rule highlight the critical need for secularism and socialism, introduced with great courage by the Iron Lady, Indira Gandhi.
Secularism means respecting all religions equally, ensuring freedom for all faiths, avoiding bias or discrimination against any religion, preventing government interference in religious activities, and separating religion and governance. Broadly, its primary goal is to foster religious harmony in the country.
However, the BJP acts against these principles, creating insecurity among minorities. The Narendra Modi government’s interference in Muslim affairs through amendments to the Waqf Board Act has caused widespread concern.
In BJP-ruled states, bulldozer policies are instilling fear and anxiety among minorities. The ongoing communal violence in Manipur since May 2023, without a single visit from Prime Minister Modi, exemplifies their irresponsibility. The BJP and Sangh Parivar’s actions make it clear how essential secularism is for India today.
The mention of socialism elicits strong reactions from the BJP and Sangh Parivar. Socialism’s primary goal, distinct from capitalism, is to provide equality and social justice to the nation’s marginalised and weaker sections. This involves equitably distributing national wealth and resources and prioritising the welfare of the poor.
As part of socialism, Ambedkar’s reservation policies must continue until justice is achieved for all marginalised communities, yet the BJP is conspiring against these reservations. Recognising the need for a nationwide caste census to ensure social justice, Rahul Gandhi’s persistent advocacy pressured the Modi government to agree to it.
The BJP government’s decision to undertake a caste census is, in part, due to the Congress government in Telangana, led by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, which completed a scientifically conducted caste census.
This sparked nationwide demands, forcing the BJP government to relent under pressure. The Congress will continue to fight on behalf of the people until the central government completes the caste census promptly and delivers social justice.
Beyond social issues, the Union government has also failed in its economic policies. While capitalists loot national wealth and resources and flee abroad, the BJP government remains a bystander. Under socialist principles, the government should support citizens through welfare measures, but the Union government is burdening the poor with taxes and GST.
While the BJP’s anti-people governance persists at the centre, the Congress government in Telangana is pursuing people-friendly policies, prioritising development and welfare. Beyond ensuring social justice, it has introduced schemes to support women, farmers, youth, marginalised, weaker sections and minorities, uplifting the poor.
When some BJP leaders approached the Supreme Court in November 2024 to remove the words ‘secular’ and ‘socialist’ from the Constitution, the apex court dismissed their plea, yet their mindset remains unchanged.
In a diverse nation like India, with its varied cultures and traditions, ensuring justice for all requires the Constitution’s benefits to reach every marginalised individual.
Since the freedom struggle, the Congress, with its deep understanding of the people’s conditions and beliefs, has honoured the Constitution crafted under Dr Ambedkar’s leadership, standing firmly with marginalised, weaker sections and minorities.
As the BJP and Sangh Parivar remove their masks and attempt to undermine the Constitution, which the people of India hold sacred, the Congress is resolute in its mission to protect it.
The Congress has sounded the clarion call for the Constitution’s preservation. Responding to the high command’s call, the Telangana Congress is successfully implementing the ‘Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan’ programme across the state.
We urge the people, civil society, and intellectuals to join hands and support the Congress’s efforts to protect the Indian Constitution, secularism, and socialism.
