Synopsis: Telangana ACB on 18 March arrested Excise Inspector Gundeti Ramu and associate Jakkani Venu in Karimnagar for allegedly extorting a jaggery merchant. Bribes routed via UPI between 2022–24; officials seized ₹20 lakh unaccounted cash.

Telangana Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Wednesday, 18 March, nabbed a Prohibition and Excise Inspector from Karimnagar Urban along with one of his associates for allegedly extorting money from a jaggery trader.

According to ACB, the officer in question, Gundeti Ramu—who had earlier served as a station house officer in Vemulawada—was in the habit of collecting routine “mamool” payments from the merchant through his friend and former colleague, Jakkani Venu, a secondary grade teacher based in Obulapur.

Investigators revealed that these illicit payments were channelled via UPI transactions between 2022 and 2024. A recent search of Ramu’s residence led officials to seize ₹20 lakh in unaccounted cash.

A formal case has been registered, and further enquiries are currently in progress.
