Synopsis: DVAC officials in Trichy arrested assistant electrical engineer Parthiban at Marungapuri for allegedly accepting a ₹5,000 bribe from farmer Mariappan seeking a free agricultural electricity connection. Initially demanding ₹10,000, Parthiban was caught in a trap laid by DVAC after Mariappan’s complaint.
Tamil Nadu Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on Wednesday, 4 March, detained an assistant electrical engineer in Marungapuri for allegedly accepting a ₹5,000 bribe from a farmer seeking a complimentary agricultural electricity connection under a government scheme.
The accused, Parthiban, was employed as assistant electrical engineer at the Marungapuri office in Trichy district, reported The Times of India.
DVAC officials reported that he had initially demanded ₹10,000 from Mariappan, a farmer, to process the free power connection for his land. The sum was later reduced to ₹5,000.
Refusing to pay, Mariappan lodged a complaint with DVAC’s Trichy unit. A case was registered on 4 March, after which a trap was organised under the supervision of Deputy Superintendent Manikandan, assisted by Inspectors Sakthivel, Xavier Rani, and Balamurugan.
Parthiban was nabbed red-handed while receiving the bribe at his office, officials confirmed. Further enquiries are ongoing.
