Wild elephant attack claims one more life in Kerala

A 40-year-old man named Mani, was killed following a wild elephant attack in Nilambur of Kerala's Malappuram district on 4 January.

A 40-year-old man named Mani, was killed following a wild elephant attack in Nilambur of Kerala’s Malappuram district on Saturday, 4 January. The incident occurred at around 7 pm on Saturday.

Mani resided at Poochappara and belonged to the Cholanaikkan tribal community. Two others, Karthik and Kuttiveeran, managed to escape while Mani was attacked by the elephant.

Meanwhile, it is said that the forest department received the information about the attack only after 9 pm.

Mani sustained a serious head injury and was initially admitted to Cherupuzha Hospital. He was later shifted to the Malappuram district hospital but could not be saved.

Recently, Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had raised the issue of increasing wild animal attacks in the state, especially in her constituency.

Recent incidents of attacks

In the past few weeks, Kerala has witnessed several instances of wild elephant attacks on humans.

A 22-year-old man named Amar Ilahi was killed in a wild elephant attack at Mullaringadu in the Idukki district on 29 December. The incident occurred when Ilahi was on the way to bring back his cattle after grazing at a teak plantation near his house.

His neighbour, 41-year-old BM Mansoor, was seriously injured but managed to escape the attack.

On 16 December, Eldhose (45), was killed in a wild elephant attack at Kuttampuzha in Kothamangalam on the border area of Ernakulam and Idukki districts.

On 14 December, 21-year-old C Ann Mary, who was riding a pillion on a two-wheeler, was killed when a palm tree uprooted by an elephant fell on her in Kothamangalam.

On 17 December, Chandran (62), a resident of Thrissur district succumbed to his injuries following an elephant attack at an estate near Valparai on the Tamil Nadu border. He was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Coimbatore after he was attacked by a wild elephant on 10 November.

According to reports, an increased number of man-animal conflicts are being reported from the districts of Wayanad, Idukki, Kannur, Thrissur and Ernakulam.

Kerala Forest Minister AK Saseendran had recently tabled a report in the state Assembly that said 909 people had died in man-animal conflicts in the state in the past eight years.
