Avinash Reddy Viveka case

For the fourth time, YSRCP MP YS Avinash Reddy appeared before the CBI at its office in Koti in Hyderabad on Tuesday, 14 March, in connection with the murder case of his uncle and former MP YS Vivekananda Reddy.

CBI Superintendent of Police (SP) Ram Singh and his team questioned Avinash Reddy for over four hours in the presence of the latter’s advocate Nagarjuna.

The MP appeared before the CBI in response to a notice issued by it in connection with the murder case that took place in March 2019 in the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh.

In spite of an ongoing Parliament session, Avinash Reddy came to the CBI office at 11.30 am and attended questioning.

CBI questions based on collected information

With the help of information collected by it including his Call Data Records (CDR), the CBI grilled Avinash Reddy and later permitted him to leave.

He had approached the Telangana High Court requesting to be given an exemption from appearing before the CBI.

The court, however, made it clear that it could not interfere in the matter.

On Monday, 13 March, the Telangana High Court asked the CBI not to take any action against Avinash Reddy in connection with the murder case till it delivers an order in response to a petition filed by him.

The court gave these directions while hearing Avinash Reddy’s petition requesting to instruct the CBI, which is probing the murder of Vivekananda, popularly known as Viveka, not to initiate any action against him.

Court reserves judgement

While asking the CBI not to take action against him, the court reserved the judgement with respect to Avinash Reddy’s petition.

The CBI brought to the notice of the court the role of Avinash Reddy in the case. The investigating agency said that Avinash Reddy played a role in tampering with the evidence.

The CBI said the questioning of Avinash Reddy was video-graphed with an audio facility.

The CBI submitted 10 documents, statements of 35 witnesses and a few photographs pertaining to the questioning of Avinash Reddy to the court in a sealed cover.

The issue related to the questioning of Avinash Reddy’s father YS Bhaskar Reddy came up at the court, which asked the CBI why he was summoned to Kadapa when the investigation was taken up in Hyderabad.

What Avinash said about CBI

Avinash Reddy has insisted that there is no truth behind the narrative that Viveka, who was the brother of erstwhile Congress strongman YS Rajashekar Reddy and uncle of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, was killed for the Kadapa MP ticket.

He contended that even a day before his murder, Viveka had campaigned in Chapadu mandal of Myadakuru seeking votes for him as Kadapa MP.

“They are recording only those statements that subscribe to their conspiracy, ignoring other facts and evidence,” Avinash Reddy told the media after he was questioned a second time by the CBI.

“Vivekananda Reddy had an affair with a woman since 2006 and probably he married her around 2011. To marry her, Viveka also changed his name to Sheik Mohammed Akbar as per Muslim law. They have a boy named Sheik Shehansha. Viveka was supposed to announce Shehanshah as his political heir,” the YSRCP MP has alleged, suggesting a motive for the murder.

Avinash Reddy also said that he never propagated the theory that Viveka died due to a heart attack as claimed by the CBI.

He said that he went to the crime spot on that day only after he was informed by Viveka’s family members.
