Synopsis: Two officials of the Kozhikode City Police were named as accused in the sex racket busted at Malaparamba, following revelations of their financial links to the brothel operator.
Two officials of the Kozhikode City Police in Kerala have been formally named as accused in the sex racket busted at Malaparamba last week, following revelations of their financial links to the brothel operator, sources said on Thursday, 12 June.
Kozhikode City Police Commissioner suspended Senior Civil Police Officer (CPO) Shaijith and CPO Sanith, both attached as drivers to the city police control room, after their names surfaced during the investigation. The two officers were listed as the 10th and 11th accused in the case.
Another person, MK Animesh, a native of Vattoli, Panangad, and currently employed in Bahrain, was also named an accused, raising the total number of accused to 12.
According to a probe led by Nadakkavu Inspector N Prajeesh, the officers maintained financial dealings with Bindu, the prime accused. One of them allegedly invited women to the brothel and acted as a receptionist to manage clients.
Even though the brothel had been under surveillance for a year, the two officers were specifically monitored over the past six months and were previously warned. The brothel, run under the guise of a spa in an apartment near a private hospital, was raided on 6 June.
Nine people, including operators, clients, and sex workers, were taken into custody. Among those held were six women and two men believed to be clients.
The operation had reportedly been running for a while, unnoticed due to the apartment’s secluded location.
However, frequent late-night visitors raised suspicion, prompting neighbours to alert police. The apartment owner claimed it was leased to a physiotherapist linked to the Bahrain football club and said he was unaware of any illegal activity, as rent was paid regularly.
