On Sunday, 3 September, G Prudhvi, an engineering graduate working with a private company, was killed while attempting to save his sister, Sanghavi, from a man with whom she had a brief relationship. The incident occurred at RTC Colony in LB Nagar, Hyderabad.

B Koteswar Rao, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, LB Nagar, told South First, “The brother-sister duo were renting the first floor of a house at RTC Colony, LB Nagar, for the past one-and-a-half years. The sister is currently pursuing Homeopathy and is in her fourth year at Ramanthapur Government College.”

The brother-sister duo are natives of Shadnagar in Rangareddy district. While completing her Class 10 in 2013, she met and got into a relationship with Shiva, the accused. But it is believed that they were having problems.

“We are yet to investigate if they broke up or if the girl was not willing to continue the relationship or if she wanted time to accept a marriage proposal,” the ADCP said.

The brutal attack

On Sunday, Shiva visited the siblings to discuss some issues with Sanghavi. Her brother Prudhvi was also present. Suddenly, an argument broke out between the three of them.

“In the heat of the moment, Prudhvi threatened Shiva with a knife. A brawl ensued and Shiva took the knife and stabbed both Prudhvi and Sanghavi multiple times. Both of them suffered serious injuries. Though Prudhvi, who had sustained more injuries than his sister, was rushed to the hospital later, he was declared dead,” the ADC said.

Sanghavi is currently out of danger at the AIG Hospital. Shiva has been taken into custody and he is undergoing treatment for minor injuries at a local hospital in LB Nagar.

Sai Sree, Deputy Commissioner of Police, told South First, “We will be registering a case under Sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code, and the accused will be remanded immediately after treatment. As the girl Sanghavi was hurt on the lips, she is unable to speak now but an FIR will be filed by Monday morning.”

Prudhvi and Sanghavi’s parents run a fast-food restaurant at Kondurg mandal in the Rangareddy district.

Locals hand over accused to police

A witness, speaking to the media, narrated, “This is a big independent house and on Sunday, children were playing outside. I heard sudden wall-banging noises and I rushed to check if something happened to the kids, but I realised that it was from the sister and brother’s floor.”

She recalled, “As I was walking towards them, the brother ran out bleeding and told me that somebody is attacking his sister and begged for her to be rescued. I ran with a long stick and hit the door to open it, but the accused had locked the door from the inside.”

Soon a group of people gathered and quickly went upstairs and broke open the windows. “We saw both the accused and the girl, they were covered in blood. We shouted out to Shiva and asked him to go to another room in order to rescue the girl, then we locked the accused inside the room. As I already made a phone call to my husband, he alerted the police and they arrested the accused,” the witness said.
