Telangana SI dies by suicide; statement reveals alleged harassment by constables

Sriramulu Srinivas, Sub-Inspector of Aswaraopeta Police Station died allegedly by suicide on Sunday, 7 July, at a private hospital in Hyderabad. He had consumed pesticide a week earlier, allegedly due to harassment and non-cooperation by constables.

On 30 June, while on duty, he left in a car. After a few hours, when the staff tried to contact him, his mobile was switched off.

Concerned he might be missing, the staff of Aswaraopet police station began searching for him. Later, his phone was traced to an agriculture market, where Sriramulu Srinivas had consumed pesticide.

He was shifted to MGM Hospital in Warangal for treatment and later to a private hospital in Hyderabad. His body has been sent for postmortem and will be handed over to the family.

Constables harassing SI a recurrent issue

On Sunday night, Sriramulu Srinivas reportedly, recorded his statement before the magistrate.

He stated, “The staff – Sanyasi Naidu, Subhani, Shekhar, Shiva Nagaraju and Nagalakshmi – handled the system record work. They quarrelled among themselves and obstructed my work.”

Srinivas continued, “When I questioned them, they harassed not only me but also anyone who wanted to complain. They were adamant about preventing me and even another constable from doing our work. When I took the help of another constable, the staff also prevented him from working.”

“I informed my CI, but he also neglected the issue. I filed a report with the DSP and received no response. I also submitted my letter regarding the constables to the Superintendent of Police (SP) and it has been 25 days,” he further stated.

“I have been requesting a transfer because these staff members have delayed my work, despite higher officials asking for reports. For the past three to four years, constables harassing the Sub Inspector (SI) has been a recurring issue at Aswaraopeta Police Station,” Sriramulu Srinivas added.

Former IPS officer and BRS leader RS Praveen Kumar, while paying condolences to SI Srinivas’s family, stated that harassment within the police force is a reality.

He said that intervention was necessary to register an FIR in Srinivas’s case, adding that CM Revanth Reddy has not addressed such issues affecting families like Srinivas’s.
