IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao on Tuesday, 13 September, moved a resolution in the Telangana Assembly requesting the Centre to name the New Parliament Building in the national capital after Babasaheb BR Ambedkar as it was he who had shown the path of democracy to the nation.

The minister said there can be no greater leader than Ambedkar for the New Parliament Building to be named after. He said the Telangana government was following the path shown by Ambedkar.

“Ambekar stood for freedom and equality, which are the cornerstones for Telangana government as well,” he said as he recalled how the man known as the ‘Father of the Indian Constitution” had opposed the hegemony of one section over the other.

How he helped bifurcation

“Even for state bifurcation, Amebdkar had laid down that an Act in Parliament would do as those who were demanding a separate state would not be able to convince the majority in their respective Assemblies to get a resolution passed in favor of division,” he said.

The minister, describing Ambedkar as a towering leader, said it would be in the fitness of things if the Central Vista in New Delhi is named after him.

He said if Telangana was a reality today, it was because of Ambedkar.

“Had there been no Article III in the Constitution, there would have been no Telangana at all,” KTR said.
