The central government’s Rozgar Mela is a sham aimed at deceiving the unemployed youth, Telangana’s Minister for IT and Industries KT Rama Rao said in an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The prime minister on Saturday, 22 October, launched the mela for recruiting 10 lakh personnel.

In the letter Rama Rao wrote on Tuesday, 25 October, he said that announcing such schemes ahead of elections had become a habit. “It is, however, to cheat the youth,” he added.

The letter was written ahead of the 3 November Munugode by-election.

The state minister urged the prime minister to instead launch genuine schemes that would benefit the unemployed youth.

Where are the jobs?

Rama Rao questioned Modi on his promise of creating two crore jobs every year. “What has happened to the 16 crore jobs that you should have created by now,” he asked. The minister urged the prime minister to publish a white paper on the number of vacancies that have been filled in the government sector.

“At a time when the Telangana government has been filling 2.24 lakh vacancies and ensuring 16.5 lakh jobs in the private sector, how many jobs should the Centre have created by now,” he sought to know.

Rama Rao said that the youth were observing the prime minister’s charade of distributing appointment letters to 75,000 youths when it cannot create 50,000 jobs per year.

“The Rozgar Mela that you have conducted is nothing but an insult to the youth. If you continue to cheat the youth promising jobs, they would very soon revolt against you,” the letter said.

The minister said that by privatising profitable public sector undertakings, the Centre was removing jobs.

“Will the youth trust you when you say that you have kicked off the Rozgar Mela” he asked. He recalled the Centre announcing that from 2014 to 2022, it had filled only seven lakh vacancies. “There are at least 16 lakh jobs that are yet to be filled,” Rama Rao said.
