Telangana DCA officials seized Ayurvedic syrup.
Synopsis: The Telangana DCA seized stocks of an Ayurvedic medicine for making misleading and prohibited claims, including that it is helpful in all kinds of flu and fever. It also busted illegal stocking and sale of huge quantities of veterinary medicines.
The Drugs Control Administration (DCA) of Telangana on Monday, 26 May, seized stocks of an Ayurvedic medicine, PLATOCORE-TOTAL Syrup, for making misleading and prohibited claims, including that it is helpful in all kinds of flu and fever.
In its label, the manufacturer claimed that the medicine helps treat swine flu and dengue on its label.
The claims violate the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954, which prohibits advertisements of drugs for the treatment of certain specified diseases and disorders. Advertising treatments for “fevers, in general” — as well as named illnesses like swine flu and dengue — is banned under the Act.
The raid was conducted on Monday at a medical store in Kaghaznagar, in the Kumuram Bheem Asifabad district, where officials seized stocks of the syrup.
The operation was carried out by Drugs Inspector G Aswani under the supervision of M Srinivasulu, Assistant Director, Karimnagar.
PLATOCORE-TOTAL Syrup is manufactured by Ultra Green (UNIT-I) in Saketri in the Panchkula district of Haryana, and marketed by Biocore Pharmaceuticals in Lodhimajra in the Solan district of Himachal Pradesh.
DCA officials stated that further investigation is ongoing, and legal action will be initiated against all responsible parties in accordance with the law.
Persons found guilty of publishing or promoting misleading advertisements under the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954 face penalties that include imprisonment of up to six months, a fine, or both.
On the same day, the DCA busted illegal stocking and sale of huge quantities of veterinary medicines in Girmajipet in Warangal, and seized stocks worth ₹2.5 lakhs during the raid.
The DCA said its officials have procured samples for analysis. They said further investigation shall be carried out and action shall be taken as per the law against all the offenders.
DCA officials, acting on credible information regarding the illegal sale of medicines, raided a medical shop named Saikiran Poultry and Vet Medicals in Girmajipet on Monday.
According to the Drugs Rules made under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, if drugs are sold or stocked for sale at more than one place, a separate licence shall be obtained in respect of each such place.
However, Saikiran Poultry and Vet Medicals was operating a medical shop at the said premises illegally, without a drug licence, said the DCA in a press release.
