Though Rupa Devi was rushed to a hospital, she was declared dead on arrival. The couple had married about 12 years ago.

Congress MLA Medipalli Satyam’s wife Rupa Devi was found dead at their residence in Panchasheel Colony in Alwal late on Friday, 20 June. Police said she had died by suicide.

Satyam was in his Choppadandi constituency in the erstwhile Karimnagar district when the incident occurred. Sources said Rupa Devi made a video call to him, saying she was ending her life.

The MLA rushed home but was too late. Police said Rupa Devi hanged herself. Her mother and children were at home when she resorted to the extreme step.

Though her family members rushed her to a private hospital with the help of neighbours, she was declared dead on arrival. The body was shifted to Gandhi Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

MLA hospitalised

Satyam fell unconscious on seeing his wife dead. He was admitted to a hospital with low blood pressure.

Rupa Devi and Satyam had a love marriage about 12 years ago. However, differences cropped up between the couple recently.

Police said Rupa Devi, a teacher, had not been attending the school for the past two days.

The couple has two children, son Yohith, 11, and daughter Rishika Sri, 9.

Police registered a case and were trying to find the reasons that forced her to end her life. She had reportedly refused to move to MLA quarters and decided to stay in Alwal, against her husband’s wish.

Satyam, who contested unsuccessfully twice in the past from the SC reserved-Choppadandi constituency, won the recent Assembly election, riding the pro-Congress wave.
