Synopsis: The Telangana Cabinet took several key decisions, including the removal of the two-child norm for contesting in local body elections, expansion of the Hyderabad Metro Rail, approval for new agriculture colleges, and the launch of large-scale road and infrastructure projects across the state.
The Telangana Cabinet, which met on Thursday, 16 October, under the chairmanship of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, took several key decisions, including the removal of the two-child norm for contesting the local body elections, expansion of the Hyderabad Metro Rail, approval for new agriculture colleges, and the launch of large-scale road and infrastructure projects across the state.
According to Information and Public Relations Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy, the Cabinet revisited the existing rule that disqualifies individuals with more than two children from contesting local body elections. The cabinet felt that, as population control measures are already being effectively implemented, there was no need to continue enforcing this restriction.
The Cabinet felt that the Hyderabad Metro Rail expansion must be expedited. It noted that the first phase operated by L&T under the PPP (Public-Private Partnership) mode has posed certain constraints, and hence the government intends to explore the takeover option to ensure faster progress on Phases 2A and 2B.
Furthermore, the Cabinet decided to set up an officials’ committee to examine the proposed Phase 2A and 2B expansion of the Hyderabad Metro Rail. The committee, headed by the Chief Secretary, has been asked to submit its report at the earliest.
The high-level committee, which comprises the Chief Secretary, principal secretaries of Finance, MA&UD, Law, the MD of Hyderabad Metro Rail, and urban transport experts, will examine all legal and financial aspects and submit a detailed report to a Cabinet sub-committee, headed by Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhati Vikramarka.
The cabinet has approved tenders worth ₹10,500 crore for constructing 5,500 km of HAM (Hybrid Annuity Model) roads. These projects will focus on connecting national highways, district and mandal headquarters, tourist destinations, and interstate routes, enhancing overall connectivity and economic activity.
For the Krishna–Vikarabad broad-gauge railway line, the Cabinet approved the acquisition of 845 hectares of land at an estimated cost of ₹438 crore, to be borne entirely by the state government. Similarly, for the Mannanur–Srisailam elevated corridor, the Cabinet decided that the state government would bear one-third of the total project cost.
The Cabinet decided to procure 80 lakh metric tonnes of khariff paddy of the total 1.48 tonnes production. Farmers will receive Minimum Support Price (MSP) plus a ₹500 bonus per quintal for fine rice.
By another decision, the cabinet cleared a proposal to set up three new modern agriculture colleges at Huzurnagar, Kodangal, and Nizamabad. Marking the completion of two years of the Congress government, the Cabinet decided to organise celebrations from 1 to 9 December. A Cabinet sub-committee will be formed to oversee the events.
