Telangana BJP chief G Kishan Reddy and his reward for dedication and loyalty

It was a red-letter day for Gangapuram Kishan Reddy for being sworn in for the second time as a cabinet minister in Modi 3.0 cabinet on Sunday, 9 June, evening.

He was the Union minister of state for Home for some time and cabinet minister for Tourism, Culture and development of North Eastern Region in Modi’s second innings from 2019 to 2024.

Always remaining committed to the party, he never swerved sidewise. Tempered in RSS ideology, Kishan Reddy, over a period of time became an invaluable asset to the party.

He won Assembly elections thrice and Lok Sabha polls twice in 2019 and 2024. His dedication to work and loyalty to the party leadership have taken him to where he is today.

After he was sworn as the Union minister for the second time, Kishan Reddy said, “In the next five years, I will have to work with as much dedication as I did during my first term. For a gully level leader to become a cabinet minister, it is possible only in the BJP. It is only your work and dedication that matter.”

“I am not part of the family of any top leader in the party. In fact those who are made ministers, often are not, and yet we grew to this level,” he said, referring to his new ministerial colleague in the two Telugu states.

Many consider that there is no place in modern day murky politics for those who are soft spoken and genteel. But Kishan Reddy has proved them wrong by surviving in the exacting field by being polite and courteous.

Rarely one would see a harsh word coming out from him, leave alone abusing anyone, which is the norm of the day.

Early life and political start

Born on 15 June 1964, in Timapur in Ranareddy district in Telangana, he made BJP his home early in life and never left it unlike many politicians. He began his political career as a youth leader in the Janata Party in 1977 and after the birth of BJP in 1980, he stuck with the party.

He entered the portals of Lok Sabha in 2019 after winning the election from Secunderabad. In 2009, he served as the floor leader of the party in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

He had a very long stint in Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) before he finally became its president in 2002.

In 2004 Kishan Reddy was elected to the assembly of undivided Andhra Pradesh from Himayatnagar constituency in Hyderabad. After delimitation, Khairatabad replaced Himayatnagar but Reddy contested and won from Amberpet in 2009.

In 2019, after winning the Lok Sabha election from Secunderabad, he was sworn in as Union Minister of State for Home Affairs and in 2021, he became a cabinet minister for tourism, culture and north eastern region.

Ahead of Assembly elections in 2023, the party leadership eased out incumbent BJP Telangana president Bandi Sanjay Kumar and appointed Kishan Reddy in his place to take on the reddy-heavy Congress at the hustings.

Kishan Reddy, while being the president of Telangana BJP, continued as Union Minister.
