The Telangana unit of the BJP from Monday, 4 September, started accepting applications from candidates aspiring to contest the Assembly elections happening in the state by the end of this year.

The applications will be accepted till 10 September. The party set up a cell at its state head office in Nampally in Hyderabad to receive applications.

Application process

On the first day, the state party general secretary, along with others, received applications from contestants.

One of the significant features of the application form, which is categorised into four levels, is furnishing details related to criminal cases, along with the punishment faced in connection with those cases.

In the first category, the aspirants must furnish their personal details, along with the political programmes in which they have participated so far in the state.

In the second category, the party seeks information regarding whether the aspirant has contested previous elections as an MP, MLA, or local body.

The third category asks for the role the candidate is currently playing in the party.

After receiving all the applications, senior leaders will visit each constituency to collect feedback from the cadres at the field level and zero in on the right candidate.

Finally, three names for each constituency will be forwarded to the high command for its consideration.

Where other parties stand

The BJP is contemplating setting up a committee to oversee the entire process.

It is expected to receive a large number of applications from Hyderabad and north Telangana, where it has a significant hold and cadre base.

Though it is rather late, the party has finally started the process of receiving applications from contestants.

The ruling BRS has already declared a list of 115 candidates a few days ago, while the Congress has commenced scrutiny of applications.

The Congress has received more than 1,000 applications for 119 Assembly constituencies, making it difficult for the high command in New Delhi to identify the right candidate for each constituency.
