The Tamil Nadu police on Friday, 6 December, arrested a 33-year-old man for alleged chain snatching incidents from the Poovirundhavalli area of Chennai, who learned tricks through YouTube.

Gunasekaran, a graduate from Avadi, was arrested for chain snatching after Mangadu police analysed over 350 surveillance recordings, said police sources.

According to police sources, he had been snatching chains since 2021 after learning techniques from YouTube. Police said he started the illegal activity after finding no way to repay a house loan.

Suspected in several cases

Gunasekaran is employed at a private firm, said police sources.

According to the information gathered by the Mangadu police, he targeted areas like Avadi, Thiruverkadu, and Mangadu. He reportedly covered his bike’s number plate to avoid detection while engaged in chain snatching.

Meanwhile, his descent into crime despite belonging to a well-off financial background shocked his neighbours and acquaintances.

During questioning, he admitted his wrongdoing to the police. Gunasekaran told the police that he had anticipation that he would be eventually caught.

The police team recovered stolen items and uncovered over ten unresolved cases linked to him. Meanwhile, the police are also tracking information related to unresolved cases to find out whether he was involved in any more cases.
