26-year-old Ramani, a Tamil teacher at a government school in Thanjavur’s Pattukottai was murdered by a man who was allegedly upset with being rejected despite continued advances. Police officials have arrested the man and an investigation is underway.
Ramani was working as a temporary teacher – teaching Tamil at Mallipattinam government higher secondary school near Thanjavur’s Pattukottai – and hails from Chinnamani village. According to a preliminary investigation, she and Madhan are from the same village and appear to have been acquaintances.
According to police reports, the man was allegedly ‘infatuated’ with Ramani – a problematic term often used to refer to a person’s continued advances on another person, despite lack of consent.
But since he continued to ‘persuade’ her to marry him, elders in the village spoke to him on 19 November about not pursuing her further. This, adding to being rejected, is what is suspected to have enraged him leading to the violent attack.
Enraged over being rejected multiple times, Madhan reportedly stabbed her in the neck on Wednesday, 20 November with a concealed knife. After being stabbed multiple times, she collapsed in a pool of blood.
She eventually succumbed to her injuries while being taken to the Patuukottai Government Hospital in an ambulance.
Sethubavachatram police in Thanjavur district, who arrested Madhan Kumar, has launched an investigation into the murder.
Even though Madhan attempted to flee after stabbing her, he was chased and apprehended by fellow teachers and students.
Addressing the media about the murder, one of the police officers part of the investigation said, “The duo supposedly knew each other, and it seems like they had disagreed over an issue.”
As the murder caused public outrage across Tamil Nadu, Thanjavur DIG Jiyavul Haq and District SP Ashish Rawat visited the school to examine the crime scene and oversee the investigation.
Condemning Ramani’s murder, Tamil Nadu minister for School Education, Anbil Mahesh said that violence against teachers cannot be tolerated. Assuring legal action against the accused, he also expressed his condolences to the victim’s family.
Additionally, the DMK minister also visited Ramani’s house to pay his last respects.

Meanwhile, Opposition leaders including AIADMK’s Edappadi K Palaniswami and BJP’s K Annamalai criticised the DMK government in the state for the brutal murder.
Citing the recent stabbing of a Oncologist at a Chennai government hospital, Annamalai took to X to express that Stalin “should be ashamed of turning TN into a lawless jungle.”
He also criticised the CM over a lawyer who was attacked in Hosur on the same day. An unknown miscreant allegedly used a sickle to attack the lawyer within the court premises.
